Biography and Education

Biography

Dr. Megan Dickson received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Kentucky in 2013 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor (Research Title Series) in the Department of Behavioral Science at the University of Kentucky. Her current research focuses on disadvantaged populations with a history of substance use, including specific emphasis on the 1) unique health and service disparities and other barriers experienced by rural populations who use substances (e.g., women); and 2) issues related to re-entry success, including substance use, among individuals with criminal legal system involvement. Dr. Dickson is the primary evaluator for two Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)-funded studies that focus on expanding treatment services for pregnant and postpartum women and one project funded by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Department for Community Based Services that aims to assist parents involved in public assistance and child welfare systems overcome multiple barriers to self-sufficiency and family safety and stability. In addition, Dr. Dickson serves as co-evaluator on another SAMHSA-funded grant, is co-investigator on a substance use research project funded by Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities, and provides analytical support for a NIDA-funded research study (R34DA045563; PI: Staton). Her work, in collaboration with colleagues and students, has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed publications and government research reports. Dr. Dickson also provides regular service to the University, Department, and scientific community, including her current role on the Executive Committee for Women in Medicine and Science in the UK College of Medicine.
