The Department of Behavioral Science is committed to providing maximum support for the training activities of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. This Guide sets forth the resources available toward that objective and the conditions for their use.
Telephones are available in each of the offices. These are for professional-related calls only. Before placing long-distance calls, graduate students and fellows should discuss payment with their supervisors.
Use of the Copier - (Room 140):
The Department's policy with respect to the copier depends on the good judgment and integrity of the users for appropriate and responsible use. There are some restrictions. First, only authorized persons, faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students funded by the Department may have access to the copier. Personal access numbers will be assigned and can be obtained from Jo Lynda Arvin. Second, there must be total compliance with the current copyright laws that pertain to the use of copiers. Third, the copier should not be used to reproduce multiple copies of numerous pages when these can be produced more economically by using the services of the Central Duplicating Department. Finally, questions regarding the most economical method of copying should be addressed to Jo Lynda Arvin. Any questions concerning the proper operation of the copier should be directed to Jo Lynda Arvin.
Supplies- (Rooms 106 and 135):
It has been the Department's policy to provide a reasonable amount of office supplies such as paper, pencils, or file folders to all personnel for professionally-related activities. In order to continue this policy, everyone must be responsible for the appropriate use of these resources. The supply room will be open during normal business hours (8:00 – 5:00, Monday – Friday). Also, when the last of a supply or a large quantity is used, please notify Jane Hollis in Room 121 in order to keep the supplies stocked up.
The Department occupies a freestanding building that does not enjoy some of the security provisions of the central Medical Center. The safety and security of our personnel and property require strict adherence to measures that have been established for our own protection.
- The building is locked Monday through Friday between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.; it is locked at all times on weekends and holidays. Persons entering the building during these hours are to be sure the door is latched and locked behind them when they enter and must be sure it is locked when they leave. Hall lights should be left on at all times.
- Keys to the front door and offices will be issued only to persons on payroll. There is a deposit due of $10.00 per key payable at time of issue. For terminating personnel, keys must be turned in for a return of the deposit and before the final paycheck will be issued.
- Care must also be taken to protect the security of all keys that are in the possession of employees. Keys must not be left in locks, lying about on desks, in unsecured pocketbooks, or in any other locations where they can easily be stolen.
- The emergency door at the rear corner of the building is protected by an alarm that sounds whenever the door is opened. For the protection of all personnel and property, this door must never be used for any purpose other than an emergency.
- During hours when the main entrance door is locked, you are not obliged to answer the doorbell. It is especially important that strangers not be admitted.
Thefts have occurred occasionally within this building. These usually entail the taking of cash from wallets and purses that have been left in view. Personal items have also been taken that have been left in view or in an unlocked desk drawer. These should be kept in a secure place that is out of view and locked in a drawer if possible.
Finally, for reasons of safety, cleanliness, and convenience, pets and bicycles should be left outside the building.
The Department is equipped with a variety of computer resources. These include micro computers for word processing and modest data processing. PCs connected to the University mainframe for major computer tasks, and access to the campus network -- e-mail, the internet, and bibliographic services through Ethernet connections.
Computer software purchased by the Department is for use on the Department's computers only. You may not copy software for personal use or for use on a computer at another site on or off campus. Computer hardware and software, like other equipment in the Department, may not be used for personal, nonacademic projects.

The Department provides modest monetary grants to graduate students to support research-related travel and data activities. Priority is given to activities that promote research-related career objectives (e.g., presenting papers at national meetings and submitting manuscripts for publication) and/or that involve active collaboration between full-time BSC faculty and graduate students. Other campus sources of support (e.g., the Graduate School) should be tapped before or simultaneously with a request of this department. A request for funding for travel expenses should be submitted to the Director of Graduate Studies.
Secretarial services in the Department are available for faculty. As has been the policy in the past, postdocs and graduate students are not offered secretarial support. The staff are not authorized to accept work from graduate students without notification by a faculty member.
Room 140 is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee-making machine, and sink. These are for the convenience of the approximately 40 people who work in the building; all must take responsibility for their cleanliness and appropriate use. The refrigerator is intended for items that are brought in daily for lunch or snacks. It is not large enough to permit the storage of items for use over several days. Any items discovered in the refrigerator without a label indicating name and date are subject to arbitrary seizure and dispatch without recourse. All items heated in the microwave must be covered lightly; if there is any splattering of food in the oven, this must be cleaned immediately so that it is not baked on by subsequent use. Dishes and utensils should not be left in the sink or on the counter for others to take care of. Dishes left in the sink or counter will be thrown away.
Members of the department have the privilege of access to the Medical Center as a setting for learning and research. Because of its patient care functions, the Medical Center is a very public place. All employees who work in the Center are required to wear the UK ID badge and are expected to observe some fundamental courtesies and amenities. These include neatness in dress and appearance; discretion in conversations that can be overheard by others; respect for the cleanliness of rest rooms, elevators, corridors, and the Center in general; sensitivity to the needs of patients, visitors, or others who may have questions or need help in finding their way; and, in essence, the maintenance of a professional posture at all times.
The entire building is designated as a non-smoking area. There are no exceptions permitted to this rule.
